Always perform a thorough client consultation prior to application. Follow the instructions precisely. Shake the bottle well before use and avoid product overuse. Do not apply the treatment to clients who are pregnant or nursing, or to any individual under the age of 12 years.

Step 1: Cleanse Gently cleanse the hair with Keratin Republic Clarifying Shampoo. Work the shampoo into a lather from roots to ends, taking care not to massage or scratch the scalp. Rinse thoroughly, towel-dry the hair to remove excess water, and detangle with a wide-tooth comb.

Step 2: Blow Dry Using a paddle brush or thermal brush on medium heat, blow-dry the hair until it reaches approximately 75 percent dryness.

Step 3: Divide Section the hair into three to four large parts to facilitate even application.

Step 4: Measure Estimate the quantity of Smooth Zero Treatment required according to hair length and density:

  • Short hair: ½ oz
  • Medium hair: ½ to ¾ oz
  • Long hair: ¾ to 1 oz

Step 5: Application Wear gloves and use an applicator brush. Working in ¼-inch to ½-inch sections, begin each section by dabbing the treatment ¼ inch from the scalp. Continue dabbing every 1 to 1½ inches until the ends are reached. Massage the product thoroughly into each section, then comb through with a fine-tooth comb in a direction away from the face to remove excess product. Do not over-saturate the hair, and do not apply the treatment directly to the scalp or skin.

Step 6: Process Allow the treatment to process for 30 to 45 minutes without heat or a processing cap. For resistant, coarse, or unruly hair types, process for the full 45 minutes.

Step 7: Rinse After processing, rinse the hair with water for 10 to 20 seconds to remove excess product. A small residual amount of treatment must remain in the hair to achieve optimal results. Do not shampoo the hair at this stage.

Step 8: Blow Dry On medium heat, blow-dry the hair completely straight and smooth with a paddle brush or thermal brush, applying tension until the hair is 100 percent dry.

Step 9: Flat Ironing Begin at the nape of the neck. Take ¼-inch to ½-inch sections and flat-iron each thoroughly from roots to ends until the hair is smooth and shiny. Adjust the iron temperature between 400 °F and 450 °F according to the condition and resistance of the hair. A test strand is recommended. Always iron in a direction away from the face. Continue until every section has been thoroughly ironed.

Recommended iron settings by hair type:

Hair Type Iron Setting
Coarse or resistant texture, virgin or extra curly 430–450 °F
Medium texture or color-treated 410–420 °F
Fine texture, double-processed, or highlighted 400 °F
