Pivot tension dictates how the two blades interact with each other throughout every cutting motion. Proper calibration isn't just about how comfortable a pair of shears feels in your hand—it directly controls blade wear, cutting accuracy, and the overall lifespan of your tool.

The Mechanics of Proper Pivot Tension

A hair-cutting shear relies on a delicate balance of physical contact between the inner ride lines of the blades. When you close the handles, the blades should contact each other smoothly at a precise focal point that moves from the pivot toward the tips.

Calibration ensures that this point of contact maintains just enough resistance to slice through hair fibers cleanly without creating unnecessary friction between the metal surfaces.

The Pitfalls of Over-Tightened Tension

Many stylists tighten their pivot screw excessively in an effort to eliminate blade play or make a dull shear feel sharper. However, over-tightened tension creates several long-term problems:

  2. Lift the thumb handle up with your other hand so the blades form a 90-degree angle.

  3. Let go of the thumb handle and allow it to fall closed naturally under its own weight.

The Ideal Balance: The blade should fall smoothly and stop approximately one-quarter to one-third of the way open. If the shear closes completely, it is too loose. If the blade barely moves, it is too tight. Adjust your tension knob or screw one click at a time until you achieve that perfect stopping point.
